...More proof that film critics are bitter assholes that couldn't make it in Hollywood.

"Dumb" or not, a lot of people cite the chestburster scene from Alien as one of the scariest in film history.

I could understand a list of stupid things otherwise smart characters did in a movie (like Brundle trying his own machine, Skynet sending a new Terminator, etc.)... How could the Imperial Walker sequence from Empire even be on this list? 25 years after the fact, it still holds up.

Adam Berliant must be a major Trekkie.

A conspicuous absence of ANY plot from ANY Trek movie just confirms this. Saving WHALES? And bringing them on your fucking SPACESHIP?

    It's not dumb.

We're talking Life Goes On Corky retarded.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">yeah i'm with you, why the hell is punching a dumb scene?....and why are the walkers bad? should they have held a sit down with the rebels instead of attacking.....oh well. if he wanted to name star wars "dumb moves" he should have listed all 3 prequels. and i always wanted to know why skynet didn't just send 10,000 terminators at once. even if he had to wait a few years in between using the time machine he could've set them to all arrive at the same time

    ...doesn't really make sense...

...not, you understand, that any of you shoule let yerselves be offended by it...its just words, after all.

...but my point is, he seems, in part, to be criticising those things which are common and vital parts oaf the sci-fi and horror genres--upping the ante with a greater threat in a sequal, or the nonsensical actions of a victim, etc. How on earth are these films supposed to work on any level at all if these things do not occur? Not to mention the fact that, for the most part, sci-fi and horror both call for a certain suspension of disbelief on the part of the viewer to work at all, that is just how it is.

In a nutshell, I don't understand his beef. *shrug*

I think they fail to separate pop sci-fi from hardcore sci-fi.

Hardcore sci-fi uses what we theorize, based on our current knowledge of the universe and it's laws, to create a believable story. Arthur C. Clarke's "2001:A Space Odyssey" is a good example of that.

The problem with realistic sci-fi is that it can be quite boring visually. Pop sci-fi ignores realism in favor of eye candy. The idea of Imperial walkers attacking from one vantage point on the ground is tactically ridiculous. Especially when the Empire could easily and more efficiently nuke the base from space. But the Imperial walkers were much more fun to watch!

Any space battle, if technically even feasable, would be so spread out that spaceships probably wouldn't visible to each other by the naked eye. Star Wars and Star Trek constantly have fleets flying in formation within yards of each other making them one big target. People forget how big space really is. But...what fun is seeing one ship blasting away at some unseen enemy?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Precisely my point. The movie would be five minutes long and the bad guys would win. What would be the point?

John Hurt would die in bed off camera...that hardly serves for a dramatic or frightening moment...

The second Terminator would be the same as the first; everyone would know how to disable him, the movie is over.

Brundle gets some bum the audience doesn't know or care about to try the machine--oops! Well, kill the mutant and head back to the drawing board.

We could go on and on.

Besides, if you are going to start pointing out the fallacies of Lucas films...by the gods...this isn't even the tip of the iceberg...
